Hi, my name is Brian Ross. I'm originally from Western Pennsylvania but have lived in Athens, GA for more than 30 years. As a young kid, my curiosity and imagination always got the best of me. From getting in trouble by taking apart the TV to learning Basic on the Commodore VIC20. In 1986 I began my 4 year stint in the Air Force as an x-ray tech. Serendipitously, I hated the medical field (as it was chosen for me), but ultimately became my jam because of the physics we learned. I guess the military sometime does recognize latent talent... ;-)
After the Air Force, I moved to Georgia to work and go to school for philology, religion, and anthropology, attempting to follow a similar path as Joseph Campbell, one of my heroes. I attended UGA for a few years, but this new thing called the Internet was born and I obsessed on HTML.
In 1993 I started Old Black Crow Creative Services providing web and graphic design. Since then I added photography and video editing to my skillset and was quite successful until about 2002. I became burned out staring at a monitor for 8 to 12 hours a day and I allowed my business to veer off more into photography. But as photography became more digital, getting away from the screen became more difficult. However, I gave all that up in 2007 when I discovered my dream job as a Clinical Applications Specialist for a medical company.
But my interests still wandered and eventually learned woodworking and rediscovered my interest in electronics and a modicum of programming. Though I enjoy doing projects such as building furniture and home automation, the Tricorder project was something I wanted to do since I was very young.
Star Trek was always an inspiration to me in both entertainment and technology... mostly technology. So when electronics became small and cheap enough, the Tricorder seemed a perfect project.
I don't know how often I will post to this site, but I sincerely hope you enjoy and learn... and teach! If there's something I can do better or more efficient, I'm always glad to learn more! Though I don't do most social media, you can probably find me on Discord (oldblackcrow#5792).
Thanks for visiting!
